Impact of aerosol concentration changes on carbon sequestration potential of rice in a temperate monsoon climate zone during the COVID-19: a case study on the Sanjiang Plain, China.

The emission reduction of atmospheric pollutants during the COVID-19 caused the change in aerosol concentration. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of changes in aerosol concentration on carbon sequestration potential. To reveal the impact mechanism of aerosols on rice carbon sequestration, the spatial differentiation characteristics of aerosol optical depth (AOD), gross primary productivity (GPP), net primary productivity (NPP), leaf area index (LAI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), and meteorological factors were compared in the Sanjiang Plain. Pearson correlation analysis and geographic detector were used to analyze the main driving factors affecting the spatial heterogeneity of GPP and NPP. The study showed that the spatial distribution pattern of AOD in the rice-growing area during the epidemic was gradually decreasing from northeast to southwest with an overall decrease of 29.76%. Under the synergistic effect of multiple driving factors, both GPP and NPP increased by more than 5.0%, and the carbon sequestration capacity was improved. LAI and FPAR were the main driving factors for the spatial differentiation of rice GPP and NPP during the epidemic, followed by potential evapotranspiration and AOD. All interaction detection results showed a double-factor enhancement, which indicated that the effects of atmospheric environmental changes on rice primary productivity were the synergistic effect result of multiple factors, and AOD was the key factor that indirectly affected rice primary productivity. The synergistic effects between aerosol-radiation-meteorological factor-rice primary productivity in a typical temperate monsoon climate zone suitable for rice growth were studied, and the effects of changes in aerosol concentration on carbon sequestration potential were analyzed. The study can provide important references for the assessment of carbon sequestration potential in this climate zone.

Gaussian Process Regression Hybrid Models for the Top-of-Atmosphere Retrieval of Vegetation Traits Applied to PRISMA and EnMAP Imagery

The continuous monitoring of the terrestrial Earth system by a growing number of optical satellite missions provides valuable insights into vegetation and cropland characteristics. Satellite missions typically provide different levels of data, such as level 1 top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance and level 2 bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA) reflectance products. Exploiting TOA radiance data directly offers the advantage of bypassing the complex atmospheric correction step, where errors can propagate and compromise the subsequent retrieval process. Therefore, the objective of our study was to develop models capable of retrieving vegetation traits directly from TOA radiance data from imaging spectroscopy satellite missions. To achieve this, we constructed hybrid models based on radiative transfer model (RTM) simulated data, thereby employing the vegetation SCOPE RTM coupled with the atmosphere LibRadtran RTM in conjunction with Gaussian process regression (GPR). The retrieval evaluation focused on vegetation canopy traits, including the leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), canopy water content (CWC), the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC). Employing band settings from the upcoming Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission (CHIME), two types of hybrid GPR models were assessed: (1) one trained at level 1 (L1) using TOA radiance data and (2) one trained at level 2 (L2) using BOA reflectance data. Both the TOA- and BOA-based GPR models were validated against in situ data with corresponding hyperspectral data obtained from field campaigns. The TOA-based hybrid GPR models revealed a range of performance from moderate to optimal results, thus reaching R2 = 0.92 (LAI), R2 = 0.72 (CCC) and 0.68 (CWC), R2 = 0.94 (FAPAR), and R2 = 0.95 (FVC). To demonstrate the models’ applicability, the TOA- and BOA-based GPR models were subsequently applied to imagery from the scientific precursor missions PRISMA and EnMAP. The resulting trait maps showed sufficient consistency between the TOA- and BOA-based models, with relative errors between 4% and 16% (R2 between 0.68 and 0.97). Altogether, these findings illuminate the path for the development and enhancement of machine learning hybrid models for the estimation of vegetation traits directly tailored at the TOA level.

The Impact of Quality Control Methods on Vegetation Monitoring Using MODIS FPAR Time Series

Monitoring vegetation dynamics (VD) is crucial for environmental protection, climate change research, and understanding carbon and water cycles. Remote sensing is an effective method for large-scale and long-term VD monitoring, but it faces challenges due to changing data uncertainties caused by various factors, including observational conditions. Previous studies have demonstrated the significance of implementing proper quality control (QC) of remote sensing data for accurate vegetation monitoring. However, the impact of different QC methods on VD results (magnitude and trend) has not been thoroughly studied. The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) characterizes the energy absorption capacity of the vegetation canopy and is widely used in VD monitoring. In this study, we investigated the effect of QC methods on vegetation monitoring using a 20-year MODIS FPAR time series. The results showed several important findings. Firstly, we observed that the Mixed-QC (no QC on the algorithm path) generally produced a lower average FPAR during the growing season compared to Main-QC (only using the main algorithm). Additionally, the Mixed-QC FPAR showed a very consistent interannual trend with the Main-QC FPAR over the period 2002–2021 (p < 0.05). Finally, we found that using only the main algorithm for QC generally reduced the trend magnitude (p < 0.1), particularly in forests. These results reveal differences in FPAR values between the two QC methods. However, the interannual FPAR trends demonstrate greater consistency. In conclusion, this study offers a case study on evaluating the influence of different QC methods on VD monitoring. It suggests that while different QC methods may result in different magnitudes of vegetation dynamics, their impact on the time series trends is limited.

Land potential assessment and trend-analysis using 2000-2021 FAPAR monthly time-series at 250 m spatial resolution.

The article presents results of using remote sensing images and machine learning to map and assess land potential based on time-series of potential Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) composites. Land potential here refers to the potential vegetation productivity in the hypothetical absence of short-term anthropogenic influence, such as intensive agriculture and urbanization. Knowledge on this ecological land potential could support the assessment of levels of land degradation as well as restoration potentials. Monthly aggregated FAPAR time-series of three percentiles (0.05, 0.50 and 0.95 probability) at 250 m spatial resolution were derived from the 8-day GLASS FAPAR V6 product for 2000-2021 and used to determine long-term trends in FAPAR, as well as to model potential FAPAR in the absence of human pressure. CCa 3 million training points sampled from 12,500 locations across the globe were overlaid with 68 bio-physical variables representing climate, terrain, landform, and vegetation cover, as well as several variables representing human pressure including: population count, cropland intensity, nightlights and a human footprint index. The training points were used in an ensemble machine learning model that stacks three base learners (extremely randomized trees, gradient descended trees and artificial neural network) using a linear regressor as meta-learner. The potential FAPAR was then projected by removing the impact of urbanization and intensive agriculture in the covariate layers. The results of strict cross-validation show that the global distribution of FAPAR can be explained with an R2 of 0.89, with the most important covariates being growing season length, forest cover indicator and annual precipitation. From this model, a global map of potential monthly FAPAR for the recent year (2021) was produced, and used to predict gaps in actual vs. potential FAPAR. The produced global maps of actual vs. potential FAPAR and long-term trends were each spatially matched with stable and transitional land cover classes. The assessment showed large negative FAPAR gaps (actual lower than potential) for classes: urban, needle-leave deciduous trees, and flooded shrub or herbaceous cover, while strong negative FAPAR trends were found for classes: urban, sparse vegetation and rainfed cropland. On the other hand, classes: irrigated or post-flooded cropland, tree cover mixed leaf type, and broad-leave deciduous showed largely positive trends. The framework allows land managers to assess potential land degradation from two aspects: as an actual declining trend in observed FAPAR and as a difference between actual and potential vegetation FAPAR.

Diffuse Fertilization Effect in Maize and Soybean Is Driven by Improved Light Use Efficiency Rather Than by Light Absorption

AbstractDiffuse radiation can improve the efficiency of terrestrial carbon uptake. Both light absorption and canopy light use efficiency (LUE) are affected by the fraction of diffuse radiation (DF). However, the relative contribution of these two factors to the diffuse fertilization effect (DFE) in the short term is not well understood. To investigate the mechanism of DFE in cropland, we collected gross primary productivity, fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and other meteorological parameters from June to August in three crop sites. Our results indicated that the short‐term DFE in soybean and maize was primarily driven by the improvement of LUE rather than light absorption. The LUE increased significantly with DF, while the FAPAR changed a little with DF. The increased DF is typically associated with reduced photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Our results showed that the potential gain in light absorption and canopy LUE from DF could not fully offset the reduced PAR in soybean and maize. The findings in this study contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the DFE.

Exploring the Interactive Influences of Climate Change and Urban Development on the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation

This study aimed to utilize hybrid physics-based models that allow for a comprehensive evaluation of how solar–meteorological variables influence the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR). By integrating both physical and statistical approaches, these models provided a novel perspective on understanding the complex relationship between solar radiation and FAPAR dynamics. The integration of URE and CLC in studying ecosystem efficiency in the nations of China and India is crucial, owing to their interdependent nature. To achieve this, the coupled model intercomparison project phase 6 (CMIP6) was utilized, which involved interpolating data from the most recent five GCMs from the six-phase CMIP6. By integrating advanced modeling techniques with observational data, this innovative approach enabled a holistic assessment of the intricate connections between urban development, climate dynamics, and the productivity of surrounding ecosystems in these regions. The reported decline in FAPAR productivity in China and India highlights the growing concern over the impact of climate change on the health and resilience of vegetation. China experienced negative changes of −1.425, −0.414, and −0.018, while India reported negative changes of −2.463, 2.199, and 2.915 under different scenarios. Interestingly, despite these variations, both countries observed similar tidal variations in their seasonal bases, suggesting a consistent pattern in the fluctuations of vegetation productivity throughout the year. The authors of this study collected and analyzed extensive data on CLC and URE in order to investigate their impact on FAPAR fluctuations in China and India. The higher impact of URE compared to CLC in terms of effective contributions suggests that URE plays a crucial role in shaping the atmospheric physics of both China, accounting for 45.26%, and India, registering 33.95%. Conversely, the effects of CLC and PAR residual factor (PRF) were more pronounced in India compared to China, with impacts of 8.21% and 53.03% compared to 4.21% and 46.70%, respectively.

Modelling Vegetation Health and Its Relation to Climate Conditions Using Copernicus Data in the City of Constance

Monitoring vegetation health and its response to climate conditions is critical for assessing the impact of climate change on urban environments. While many studies simulate and map the health of vegetation, there seems to be a lack of high-resolution, low-scale data and easy-to-use tools for managers in the municipal administration that they can make use of for decision-making. Data related to climate and vegetation indicators, such as those provided by the C3S Copernicus Data Store (CDS), are mostly available with a coarse resolution but readily available as freely available and open data. This study aims to develop a systematic approach and workflow to provide a simple tool for monitoring vegetation changes and health. We built a toolbox to streamline the geoprocessing workflow. The data derived from CDS included bioclimate indicators such as the annual moisture index and the minimum temperature of the coldest month (BIO06). The biophysical parameters used are leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR). We used a linear regression model to derive equations for downscaled biophysical parameters, applying vegetation indices derived from Sentinel-2, to identify the vegetation health status. We also downscaled the bioclimatic indicators using the digital elevation model (DEM) and Landsat surface temperature derived from Landsat 8 through Bayesian kriging regression. The downscaled indicators serve as a critical input for forest-based classification regression to model climate envelopes to address suitable climate conditions for vegetation growth. The results derived contribute to the overall development of a workflow and tool for and within the CoKLIMAx project to gain and deliver new insights that capture vegetation health by explicitly using data from the CDS with a focus on the City of Constance at Lake Constance in southern Germany. The results shall help gain new insights and improve urban resilient, climate-adaptive planning by providing an intuitive tool for monitoring vegetation health and its response to climate conditions.

Simultaneous estimation of five temporally regular land variables at seven spatial resolutions from seven satellite data using a multi-scale and multi-depth convolutional neural network

Various satellite sensors have provided a huge amount of observations of Earth's environment at variable spatial and temporal resolutions. Many global coarse-resolution land products have been generated from single-satellite data, but global temporally regular land products at fine spatial resolutions (say 10-30 m) are scarce because of infrequent observations. An ideal inversion framework can estimate multiple global continuous land variables at different spatial resolutions by combining all sources of satellite data. This paper proposes a new framework that can estimate five land variables simultaneously from the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance acquired by seven satellite sensors based on a multi-scale and multi-depth convolutional neural network (MSDCNN). This framework enables us to estimate temporally regular land variables at as fine as 10 m spatial resolution by transforming information from satellite data at coarser spatial resolutions. The estimated land variables include Leaf Area Index (LAI), Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR), shortwave albedo, visible albedo, and spectral reflectance. Seven sensors that acquire data at different spatial resolutions, include Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) (750 m), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (500 m), Fengyun-3 (FY-3) Medium Resolution Spectral Imager (MERSI) (250 m), China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite 04 (CBERS-04) Wide Field Imager (WFI) (73 m), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) (30 m), Gaofen-1 (GF-1) Wide-Field-of-View (16 m) and Sentinel 2 A/B Multispectral Imager (MSI) (10 m). This framework is mainly composed of four steps. First, a Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE) optimization method is adopted to estimate these variables from VIIRS TOA reference. Second, a joint-output random forest regression (RF) method is used to link the satellite observations and the estimated values from step 1. Third, the six-type multi-resolution satellite observations are used to downscale the VIIRS TOA reflectance to six different spatial resolutions by using the MSDCNN. Finally, the downscaled six-resolution VIIRS TOA reflectance is fed into the multiple-variable RF model to estimate land variables. The framework was validated, and the results based on high-resolution reference maps from ImagineS network and time series shortwave albedo field values from Surface Radiation (SURFRAD) and Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) network show that the retrieved variables had high validation accuracy, with root mean square error (RMSE) ranges of 0.361–0.489 (LAI), 0.023–0.120 (FAPAR), 0.013–0.026 (snow-free shortwave albedo), respectively. Comparison results of the retrieved multi-scale variables with the Sentinel 2 A/B (10 m), Landsat 8 (30 m), Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS, 250 m, 500 m), MODIS (500 m), and VIIRS (750 m) products show that their values were close, with RMSE ranges of 0.107–0.273 (LAI), 0.015–0.027 (FAPAR), 0.003–0.007 (shortwave albedo), 0.001–0.007 (visible albedo), and 0.003–0.025 (spectral reflectance), respectively. The results of the direct validation as well as the product intercomparison show that this novel framework has the potential to be used in estimating global land variables at various spatial scales using a variety of satellite data sources.

Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing to Estimate Biophysical Variables of Green-Onion Crop (Allium cepa L.) under Different Sources of Magnesium in Ismailia, Egypt

Foliar feeding has been confirmed to be the fastest way of dealing with nutrient deficiencies and increasing the yield and quality of crop products. The synthesis of chlorophyll and photosynthesis are directly related to magnesium (Mg), which operates in the improvement of plant tissues and enhances the appearance of plants. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between two biophysical variables, including the leaf area index (LAI), the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and seven spectral vegetation indices. The spectral indices under investigation were Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index (ARVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Disease–Water Stress Index (DSWI), Modified Chlorophyll Absorption Ratio Index (MCARI), the Red-Edge Inflection Point Index (REIP), and Pigment-Specific Simple Ratio (PSSRa). These indices were derived from Sentinel-2 data to investigate the impact of applying foliar applications of Mg from various sources in the production of green-onion crops. The biophysical variables were derived using field measurements and Sentinel-2 data under the effects of different sources of Mg foliar sprays. The correlation coefficient between field-measured LAI and remotely sensed, calculated LAI was 0.72 in two seasons. Concerning FAPAR, it was found that the correlation between remotely sensed calculated FAPAR and field-measured FAPAR was 0.66 in the first season and 0.89 in the second season. The magnesium oxide nanoparticle (nMgO) treatments resulted in significantly higher yields than the different treatments of foliar applications. The LAI and FAPAR variables showed a positive correlation with yield in the first season (October) and in the second season (March). Yield in treatment by nMgO varied significantly from that in the other treatments, ranging from 69-ton ha−1 in the first season to 74.9-ton ha−1 in the second season. Linear regression between LAI and PSSRa showed the highest correlation coefficient (0.90) compared with other vegetation indices in the first season. In the same season, the highest correlation coefficient (0.94) was found between FAPAR and PSSRa. In the second season, the highest accuracy to the estimate LAI was found in the correlation between MCARI and PSSRa, with correlation coefficients of 0.9 and 0.91, respectively. In the second season, the highest accuracy to the estimate FAPAR was found with the correlation between PSSRa, ARVI, and NDVI, with correlation coefficients 0.97 and 0.96, respectively. The highest correlation coefficients between vegetation indices and yield were found with ARVI and NDVI in the first season, and only with NDVI in the second season.

Untangling the Causal Links between Satellite Vegetation Products and Environmental Drivers on a Global Scale by the Granger Causality Method

The Granger Causality (GC) statistical test explores the causal relationships between different time series variables. By employing the GC method, the underlying causal links between environmental drivers and global vegetation properties can be untangled, which opens possibilities to forecast the increasing strain on ecosystems by droughts, global warming, and climate change. This study aimed to quantify the spatial distribution of four distinct satellite vegetation products’ (VPs) sensitivities to four environmental land variables (ELVs) at the global scale given the GC method. The GC analysis assessed the spatially explicit response of the VPs: (i) the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), (ii) the leaf area index (LAI), (iii) solar-induced fluorescence (SIF), and, finally, (iv) the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to the ELVs. These ELVs can be categorized as water availability assessing root zone soil moisture (SM) and accumulated precipitation (P), as well as, energy availability considering the effect of air temperature (T) and solar shortwave (R) radiation. The results indicate SM and P are key drivers, particularly causing changes in the LAI. SM alone accounts for 43%, while P accounts for 41%, of the explicitly caused areas over arid biomes. SM further significantly influences the LAI at northern latitudes, covering 44% of cold and 50% of polar biome areas. These areas exhibit a predominant response to R, which is a possible trigger for snowmelt, showing more than 40% caused by both cold and polar biomes for all VPs. Finally, T’s causality is evenly distributed amongst all biomes with fractional covers between ∼10 and 20%. By using the GC method, the analysis presents a novel way to monitor the planet’s ecosystem, based on solely two years as input data, with four VPs acquired by the synergy of Sentinel-3 (S3) and 5P (S5P) satellite data streams. The findings indicated unique, biome-specific responses of vegetation to distinct environmental drivers.

Identification of Robust Hybrid Inversion Models on the Crop Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation Using PROSAIL Model Simulated and Field Multispectral Data

The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), which represents the capability of vegetation-absorbed solar radiation to accumulate organic matter, is a crucial indicator of photosynthesis and vegetation growth status. Although a simplified semi-empirical FPAR estimation model was easily obtained using vegetation indices (VIs), the sensitivity and robustness of VIs and the optimal inversion method need to be further evaluated and developed for canola FPAR retrieval. The objective of this study was to identify the robust hybrid inversion model for estimating the winter canola FPAR. A field experiment with different sow dates and densities was conducted over two growing seasons to obtain canola FPARs. Moreover, 29 VIs, two machine learning algorithms and the PROSAIL model were incorporated to establish the FPAR inversion model. The results indicate that the OSAVI, WDRVI and mSR had better capability for revealing the variations of the FPAR. Three parameters of leaf area index (LAI), solar zenith angle (SZA) and average leaf inclination angle (ALA) accounted for over 95% of the total variance in the FPARs and OSAVI exhibited a greater resistance to changes in the leaf and canopy parameters of interest. The hybrid inversion model with an artificial neural network (ANN-VIs) performed the best for both datasets. The optimal hybrid inversion model of ANN-OSAVI achieved the highest performance for canola FPAR retrieval, with R2 and RMSE values of 0.65 and 0.051, respectively. Finally, the work highlights the usefulness of the radiation transfer model (RTM) in quantifying the crop canopy FPAR and demonstrates the potential of hybrid model methods for retrieving the canola FPAR at each growth stage.

Evaluating crop-specific responses to salinity and drought stress from remote sensing

Food security is projected to be threatened by increasing co-occurring stresses (e.g., drought and salinity) under global climate change. To mitigate major impacts on food production, the tolerances and vulnerabilities of crops to these threats need to be characterized. The aim of this research is to assess the tolerances of crops to the combination of drought and salinity stress across plant functions under real-life settings. Using five traits, we evaluated the impacts of drought and salinity tolerance on a multitude of crops across throughout the United States. We assessed the dominant stress as well as the onset of combined and individual effects of drought and salinity from March to October. We indeed observed that stress impacts strongly depended on time. In addition, we observed that crops were more sensitive to combined salinity and drought than to individual stresses, although stress impacts significantly varied between time and species. Of the individual traits, leaf Area Index (LAI) was triggered first by stresses, followed by the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC) and the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), and leaf water content (Cw) and leaf chlorophyll content (Cab) were the last to respond to stresses. In comparison to other species, almond demonstrated greater resilience to combined drought and salinity, whereas soybean and maize were more drought tolerant. In combination, our study provides a way of assessing the tolerance of various crops to co-occurrent stresses both independently and in combination. By allowing applications to other co-occurring stresses and vegetation types, our approach creates a quantitative foundation to inform sustainable food production.

Rapid Vegetation Growth due to Shifts in Climate from Slow to Sustained Warming over Terrestrial Ecosystems in China from 1980 to 2018

The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) is a key biophysiological parameter of terrestrial ecosystems. However, due to a lack of data with adequate spatial resolution and in long enough time series, there have been limitations in exploring the spatiotemporal changes of vegetation and response to climate change. In this study, a 1 km spatial resolution and 8-day period length dataset (FPARANN) was developed covering the years 1980 to 2018 and evaluated on spatiotemporal change consistency by validating with Gross Primary Production (GPP) observations from the Chinese Flux Observation and Research Network (ChinaFLUX), and comparison with other FPAR products. FPARANN provided a comparable performance in capturing seasonal change observed through GPP, according to the coefficient of determination (R2): 0.50, 0.51, 0.70 and 0.74 averaged for all sites, forest sites, grassland sites and cropland flux sites, respectively. The new data had more spatial similarity to the MODIS FPAR product (FPARMCD15A2) with a greater R2 (0.77) and a lower RMSE (0.12) than other products. With a newly developed dataset, combined with FPARANN (1980–2003) and FPARMCD15A2 (2004–2018), an overall increasing trend in FPAR was found for over 81% of the vegetated area of China from 1980 to 2018. FPAR increased more rapidly for over 83.7% of the area in the 2010s, and at a slower pace for over 62.1% of the area in the early 2000s, which was attributed to a decadal shifting of climate change. This study implies the new dataset is useful in quantifying vegetation changes and would be an important data source for future study of the carbon cycle, soil erosion, or evapotranspiration, with great application potential.

The development of a global LAI and FAPAR product using GCOM-C/SGLI data

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the Global Change Observation Mission - Climate (GCOM-C) satellite on December 23rd, 2017. As a part of the standard products of JAXA’s GCOM-C satellite, we developed the Leaf Area Index (LAI) and the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) product. In comparison to other global LAI and FAPAR products by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS), our products have the following advantageous features: high spatial and temporal resolution (250 m and daily); the retrieval algorithm (look-up-table) is based on “the Forest Light Environmental Simulator” (FLiES) which is a full 3-D canopy radiative transfer model as well as a vegetation landscape model and a global forest landscape map created for this study. The algorithm and ancillary data sets are completely independent of the existing products that are more or less influenced by the MODIS LAI/FAPAR, providing an alternate and independent source of LAI and FAPAR. The dataset has been created since April 2018 and is freely available on JAXA’s G-Portal site (https://gportal.jaxa.jp/gpr). As a result of accuracy assessment with in-situ data, the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) for total LAI and FAPAR were 0.776 and 0.112, respectively. We also compared our LAI and FAPAR estimates with three existing global datasets (PROBA-V/OLCI, MODIS and VIIRS product). The spatial distribution of LAI and FAPAR showed different characteristics among the datasets although their temporal trends were similar. The differences in estimation results among datasets due to differences in the retrieval algorithms, base map (or land cover data) and input data need to be evaluated in the future.

Cloud-Free Global Maps of Essential Vegetation Traits Processed from the TOA Sentinel-3 Catalogue in Google Earth Engine

Global mapping of essential vegetation traits (EVTs) through data acquired by Earth-observing satellites provides a spatially explicit way to analyze the current vegetation states and dynamics of our planet. Although significant efforts have been made, there is still a lack of global and consistently derived multi-temporal trait maps that are cloud-free. Here we present the processing chain for the spatiotemporally continuous production of four EVTs at a global scale: (1) fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR), (2) leaf area index (LAI), (3) fractional vegetation cover (FVC), and (4) leaf chlorophyll content (LCC). The proposed workflow presents a scalable processing approach to the global cloud-free mapping of the EVTs. Hybrid retrieval models, named S3-TOA-GPR-1.0-WS, were implemented into Google Earth Engine (GEE) using Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) Level-1B for the mapping of the four EVTs along with associated uncertainty estimates. We used the Whittaker smoother (WS) for the temporal reconstruction of the four EVTs, which led to continuous data streams, here applied to the year 2019. Cloud-free maps were produced at 5 km spatial resolution at 10-day time intervals. The consistency and plausibility of the EVT estimates for the resulting annual profiles were evaluated by per-pixel intra-annually correlating against corresponding vegetation products of both MODIS and Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS). The most consistent results were obtained for LAI, which showed intra-annual correlations with an average Pearson correlation coefficient (R) of 0.57 against the CGLS LAI product. Globally, the EVT products showed consistent results, specifically obtaining higher correlation than R> 0.5 with reference products between 30 and 60° latitude in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, intra-annual goodness-of-fit statistics were also calculated locally against reference products over four distinct vegetated land covers. As a general trend, vegetated land covers with pronounced phenological dynamics led to high correlations between the different products. However, sparsely vegetated fields as well as areas near the equator linked to smaller seasonality led to lower correlations. We conclude that the global gap-free mapping of the four EVTs was overall consistent. Thanks to GEE, the entire OLCI L1B catalogue can be processed efficiently into the EVT products on a global scale and made cloud-free with the WS temporal reconstruction method. Additionally, GEE facilitates the workflow to be operationally applicable and easily accessible to the broader community.

Temporal upscaling of MODIS instantaneous FAPAR improves forest gross primary productivity (GPP) simulation

Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a measure of carbon uptake by terrestrial ecosystems for carbon neutrality and serves as a key indicator for the Sustainable Development Goals. The instantaneous Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) is applied in GPP estimation by light use efficiency (LUE) models. However, an obvious time scale mismatch exists between instantaneous FAPAR and daily accumulated GPP. In the study, we explored the potential of temporal upscaling instantaneous FAPAR in improving GPP simulation. The absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) derived from instantaneous and upscaled FAPARs were first compared. GPPs were estimated from instantaneous and upscaled FAPAR by MOD17 LUE model using default and optimized parameters. The optimized GPP was finally compared with three GPP products: GLASS, MOD17A2H and MYD17A2H GPP. The APARs and GPPs were evaluated with the Eddy Covariance (EC) GPP at 78 forest sites from the Fluxnet community. Results showed that when compared with EC GPP, the upscaled FAPAR-derived APAR held a higher R2 (0.26–0.73) than that from instantaneous FAPARs. The upscaled FAPAR-based GPPs by MOD17 LUE model with default or optimized parameters had a larger R2 and smaller RMSE reducing uncertainties by 6.82–7.8% (maximum value: 27.9–49%). The optimized upscaled FAPAR-derived GPP was far superior to the GPP products with larger R2 (0.69–0.85) and smaller RMSE (12.8–14.6 g C/m2/8d). It is concluded that temporal upscaling of MODIS instantaneous FAPAR can well improve the estimation of forest GPP and the parameters of MOD17 LUE model should be further optimized. Our study is an effort toward reducing the uncertainties from FAPAR in the GPP estimation for better assessing the achievement of carbon neutrality and Sustainable Development Goals.

Exploring the Potential of Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence Monitoring Drought-Induced Net Primary Productivity Dynamics in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain Based on the SIF/NPP Ratio

Drought causes significant losses in vegetation net primary productivity (NPP). However, the lack of real-time, large-scale NPP data poses challenges in analyzing the relationship between drought and NPP. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) offers a real-time approach to monitoring drought-induced NPP dynamics. Using two drought events in the Huang–Huai–Hai Plain from 2010 to 2020 as examples, we propose a new SIF/NPP ratio index to quantify and evaluate SIF’s capability in monitoring drought-induced NPP dynamics. The findings reveal distinct seasonal changes in the SIF/NPP ratio across different drought events, intensities, and time scales. SIF demonstrates high sensitivity to commonly used vegetation greenness parameters for NPP estimation (R2 > 0.8, p < 0.01 for SIF vs NDVI and SIF vs LAI), as well as moderate sensitivity to land surface temperature (LST) and a fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR) (R2 > 0.5, p < 0.01 for SIF vs FAPAR and R2 > 0.6, p < 0.01 for SIF vs LST). However, SIF shows limited sensitivity to precipitation (PRE). Our study suggests that SIF has potential for monitoring drought-induced NPP dynamics, offering a new approach for real-time monitoring and enhancing understanding of the drought–vegetation productivity relationship.

Row orientation influences the diurnal cycle of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emission from wheat canopy, as demonstrated by radiative transfer modeling

Although multiple studies have used solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) of the crop canopy to estimate photosynthetic activity, the effect of canopy geometry (row orientation) on diurnal SIF remains uncertain. Using a combination of 3D canopy radiative transfer modeling and spectroscopic observations collected in a winter wheat field, we investigated (i) the relationships between observed SIF and factors including temperature, humidity, absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR), and row orientation; (ii) the temporal pattern and multi-angle distribution of diurnal canopy SIF; and (iii) the mechanisms influencing components of diurnal SIF under the effect of row orientation. The relationship between observed SIF and APAR was relatively strong at the early growth period, but SIF was influenced by various factors (temperature, humidity, and row–sun angle) at the middle of the growth period. To test an asymmetric crop row effect as a potential cause of this skewness, we evaluated the modeled SIF with a 3D northwestward (315°) crop row alignment and other orientations. Each row orientation resulted in a trough-like depression parallel to the row in simulated canopy SIF, which could cause a diurnal asymmetry of canopy SIF, a fraction of fluorescence escape, and a fraction of APAR. View angles, the dimension of canopy objects (1D/3D), inter-row width, and leaf structure parameters impacted the representativeness of these simulations. An increased shade SIF, synchronized with the time when row–sun angles become zero at the incident sunlight being parallel to the crop row, was linked to decreasing canopy SIF emissions and would cause a non-linear SIF–APAR relationship at certain row orientations especially facing diagonally to the south. The concept of row orientation provides a novel viewpoint of diurnal canopy SIF from which to test the effect of row geometry in cropland, and will promote a mechanistic understanding of photosynthesis and canopy light use.

Multi-Scale Analysis of Agricultural Drought Propagation on the Iberian Peninsula Using Non-Parametric Indices

Understanding how drought propagates from meteorological to agricultural drought requires further research into the combined effects of soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and precipitation, especially through the analysis of long-term data. To this end, the present study examined a multi-year reanalysis dataset (ERA5-Land) that included numerous drought events across the Iberian Peninsula, with a specific emphasis on the 2005 episode. Through this analysis, the mechanisms underlying the transition from meteorological to agricultural drought and its features for the selected region were investigated. To identify drought episodes, various non-parametric standardized drought indices were utilized. For meteorological droughts, the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was employed, while the Standardized Soil Moisture Index (SSI), Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (MSDI), and Standard Precipitation, Evapotranspiration and Soil Moisture Index (SPESMI) were utilized for agricultural droughts, while their ability to identify relative vegetation stress in areas affected by severe droughts was investigated using the Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) Anomaly provided by the Copernicus European Drought Observatory (EDO). A statistical approach based on run theory was employed to analyze several characteristics of drought propagation, such as response time scale, propagation probability, and lag time at monthly, seasonal, and six-month time scales. The retrieved response time scale was fast, about 1–2 months, and the probability of occurrence increased with the severity of the originating meteorological drought. The duration of agricultural drought was shorter than that of meteorological drought, with a delayed onset but the same term. The results obtained by multi-variate indices showed a more rapid propagation process and a tendency to identify more severe events than uni-variate indices. In general terms, agricultural indices were found to be effective in assessing vegetation stress in the Iberian Peninsula. A newly developed combined agricultural drought index was found to balance the characteristics of the other adopted indices and may be useful for future studies.

An Assessment of Relations between Vegetation Green FPAR and Vegetation Indices through a Radiative Transfer Model.

The fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) is widely used in remote sensing-based production models to estimate gross or net primary production. The forest canopy is composed primarily of photosynthetically active vegetation (PAV, green leaves) and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV e.g., branches), which absorb PAR but only the PAR absorbed by PAV is used for photosynthesis. Green FPAR (the fraction of PAR absorbed by PAV) is essential for the accurate estimation of GPP. In this study, the scattering by arbitrary inclined leaves (SAIL) model was reconfigured to partition the PAR absorbed by forest canopies. The characteristics of green FPAR and its relationships with spectral vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI, EVI2, and SAVI) were analyzed. The results showed that green FPAR varied with the canopy structure. In the forests with high coverage, the green FPAR was close to the total FPAR, while in the open forests, the green FPAR was far smaller than the total FPAR. Plant area index had more important impacts on the green FPAR than the proportion of PAV and optical properties of PAV. The significant relationships were found between spectral vegetation indices and the green FPAR, but EVI was more suitable to describe the variation of canopy green FPAR.
